Floyd County, Virginia (local government) is seeking a student to serve as a graduate assistant for Fall 2022 and Spring 2023. This position includes a 20 hour a week stipend and full tuition remission. Students can work on-site and through telecommuting arrangements however, students should have their own transportation.
Projects:
• Building on other local government models and the county’s existing efforts, develop a communications program for the county’s aging and disabled population; collect data on seniors and the services they may need; help improve the county’s ability to find, communicate with, and do well-check calls to those who cannot easily get out of the house and/or are without important supports: develop a plan of implementation and recommendations on how to serve this community.
• Working with the Economic Development Department, develop a listing of available properties in the county for potential economic development purposes. This will require working with the PSA, Citizens, AEP, and other to identify locations with services available, that are currently unused or underused, that may be available for community and economic development. Currently the county lacks a good inventory of space which limits our ability to assist our own growing businesses and find locations for economic development prospects.
• Work with staff on the transition to a new underlying accounting/payroll/hr/budgeting software system.
• Support county staff as needed.
• Other projects as time allows:
o Health Care research and connections: Assist the county in determining the need for (data analysis) and options for current county challenges with lack of urgent care, home health care, and adult day care. (Note: the goal is NOT to create a county-owned option but rather explore creative alternatives). These issues are frequently mentioned as both citizen concerns and barriers to economic growth.
