The Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion has primary responsibility for providing leadership, development and administrative oversight while prioritizing a culture that values equity, inclusion and diversity. By leading the college's initiatives, the CAUS Director of DEI will build and implement a range of successful practices for supporting the faculty, staff and students in meeting their shared goal of a diverse and inclusive learning and working environment.


The Director is the liaison for CAUS for InclusiveVT, the university's distributed model of diversity and inclusion. In this capacity, the Director builds connections for the college to university-wide opportunities related to transformational institutional change, representational diversity, equity across the academic mission and a welcoming, safe and accessible campus climate.


The Director works with the executive leadership team in CAUS to advance the college’s diversity strategic plan and uses evidence-based strategies to assist the college in developing efforts in creating and sustaining a culture that embraces and promotes diversity and inclusion in their broadest meanings. Emphasis is placed on the development of long-term strategies and collaborations designed to enhance the college climate to increase the recruitment, matriculation, support, retention, and graduation of underrepresented faculty, staff and minority students.


The director interacts with constituents across the university, including students, faculty, administrators, alumni, state agency executives and officials while leading and facilitating diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.

A successful director demonstrates excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills with an ability to influence, build enthusiasm and reinforce commitment with faculty, staff and students across all cultures and demographics. A deep knowledge of change management and strategies will assist the director in determining priorities and making critical decisions. Professional communication skills will be integral during trainings, workshops and presentations to stakeholders.


The Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is a member of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies executive leadership team. The position reports to the dean of the college.


Required Qualifications

- Demonstrated experience designing or managing DEI efforts in higher education, a public or private organization.

- Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree with equivalent training and experience.

- Demonstrated success in developing innovative strategy and driving process improvements regarding diversity and inclusion issues in the workplace.

- Increasing levels of responsibility and experience with recruitment in a professional or academic setting.

Preferred Qualifications

- Previous Human Resources experience or collaborations.

- Professional diversity leadership certification (CDE, CDI are examples).
