What is the Mount Rogers Regional Partnership?
The Mount Rogers Regional Partnership (MRRP) represents a region of five counties and one city. Branding the region as ‘Virginia’s I81-I77 Crossroads’, an area stretching from Carroll County to Smyth County along Interstates 81 and 77, the organization membership consists of Smyth, Wythe, Grayson, Carroll and Bland counties, and the City of Galax.
MRRP was formed as a non-profit, multi-jurisdictional Regional Economic Development Organization (REDO) conduct outreach marketing, prospect development, project management and work with its six localities to support and enhance their economic development efforts. It is one of eighteen REDOs in the commonwealth of Virginia. The Mount Rogers Regional Partnership is financed by its member localities, as well as
voluntary private sector funding. The organization is served by a board of directors with representatives from local governments, private sector, and community colleges.
What is the Internship Opportunity?
The Mount Rogers Regional Partnership would like to provide 2 internships to university or college students interested in local government management, economic development, or community development an opportunity to be immersed in its member localities. The internship opportunity would begin on June 1, 2022 and conclude on July 15, 2022.
Interns would be asked to work three days per week.
During those six weeks, interns will work with the member localities and the Industrial
Development Authorities/Economic Development Authorities to inventory available properties for development or redevelopment, including existing buildings and vacant properties that are privately and publicly owned. Interns will drive throughout the six localities to complete the inventory.
This project will include working with the Virginia Scan VEDP Sites platform, and potentially Loopnet to upload relevant property information for new listings and update information for existing listings.
MOUNT ROGERS REGIONAL PARTNERSHIP
Interns will have the opportunity to visit with each of the six locality’s Chief
Administration Officers and their administration teams. Spending time directly with locality administration may provide valuable insight into the role of the local government manager and the day-to-day operations of the locality. Interns would provide their own transportation. Interns will be compensated for mileage and food at $65 per day.
At the conclusion of the six-week period, interns will provide the Mount Rogers Regional Partnership with a regional analysis regarding attracting and retaining residents and employees to the region. Interns should identify the strengths and the challenges of the region; as well, as provide recommendations to combat the challenges. This analysis should be based on the visits with the local administrators as well as personal thoughts
and insight.
